Virginia Ann Brooks, 78, of South Charleston passed away Sunday, February 19, 2012, at Hubbard Hospice House West at Thomas Memorial Hospital.She was retired form Columbia Gas with many years of service. She was involved with the South Charleston Water Aerobics class at the South Charleston Recreation Center for many years, and enjoyed traveling with her friends around the country, and had even traveled abroad. Virginia was an avid WVU Mountaineers fan, and a 1951 graduate of South Charleston High School.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Royce Brooks; brother, Carl Mandeville Jr.; and parents, Carl and Ann Mandeville.
Surviving are her sons, Ed Brooks, Tim and his wife, Dorothy Brooks, and Phill and his wife, Michelle Brooks, all of South Charleston; brothers and sisters-in-law, John and Sandy Mandeville of St. Albans and Jim and Susan Mandeville of St. Petersburg, Fla.; sisters-in-law, Mary Mandeville and Betty Brooks; grandchildren, Stevie Osborne, Brent Osborne, Kristen, Alex, Emily and Hayden Brooks and Samantha Gaten; and many nieces and nephews.
Service will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Good Shepherd Mortuary, South Charleston with the Rev. Tom Nolan officiating. Entombment will be in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.

Carolyn Barbara (Weaver) Coon, 74, of St. Albans quietly left this world Sunday, February 19, 2012, at her residence.Born February 12, 1938, in Anawalt, Carolyn was the daughter of the late John R. and Ruby Lou Weaver. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Billy L. Coon; and her son, James A. Coon.
All who knew her called her a sweet, gentle lady. She was always willing to help her family, friends and neighbors, and enjoyed spending time outdoors visiting with everyone.
Carolyn graduated from Van High School, and attended Cumberland College prior to marrying Billy L. Coon. She worked part-time for several local churches while raising two children. In her later years, she was a volunteer at Thomas Memorial Hospital, as well as a volunteer income tax preparer through VITA and AARP.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Joyce and Craig Hoffman of Atlantic Beach, Fla.; daughter-in-law, Sandra McCallister of Hurricane; granddaughters, Destiny Coon of Hurricane and Jamie Coon of Illinois; and brothers, John R Weaver Jr. of Cross Lanes and Jerry Weaver of Charleston.
Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Friday, February 24, at First Baptist Church, Sixth Avenue and Second Street, St. Albans, with the Rev. Joel M. Harpold officiating.

William F. "Bill" Foster II of Charleston peacefully departed this life for his heavenly home Thursday, February 16, 2012.Bill was born February 25, 1970, the son of Sandra Foster, presently of Charleston, and William "Bill" Foster and wife, Tammy, of Glenville. He leaves behind thousands of mourning relatives and friends who loved, valued and cherished him. These include Amy Adamson, his lifelong companion and love of his life; his aunt, Dr. Carol Foster and her two daughters, Jennifer and Melissa Head. Jennifer and Melissa were loved and cared for by Bill, and were as close and dear to him as if they were his children. Grieving in their own way are his two little beloved dogs, Becca and Buckeye (Little Man). Bill's grandparents include Lorraine Marshall of Ripley, Bud Foster of Glenville and Sebert and Clara Lucas, who greeted him in Heaven. Also grieving this loss are Bob and Judy Jones of Sand Fork; Dallas and Charlotte Igo of Glenville; Calvin and Helen Lucas of Spencer; and hundreds of cousins across the state and nation.
Bill loved the Lord Jesus Christ, as was evident by his Facebook posts and the many tributes that are presently being paid to him through this medium. Bill was saved and baptized when he was seven years old, and attended church wherever he lived, in college and law school, and, at his passing, was a member of River Ridge Church, Charleston.
Bill was a graduate of Gilmer County High School; Shepherd University; and West Virginia University College of Law. He also attended Downing College at Cambridge University in the United Kingdom. He was admitted to the West Virginia State and Federal Bars in 1995, and began practicing law with the firm of Jacobson, Maynard & Tuschman, and served as a partner in the Kay, Casto & Chaney law firm for five years before starting The Foster Law Firm in Charleston.
Bill possessed extensive medical legal knowledge, and was adept at handling medical litigation matters. His clients knew he cared for them in a very professional and personal manner. He was a member of many fraternal and legal organizations, and proudly served on various community organizations, including the board of directors for Covenant House; Kanawha Pastoral Counseling Center; and Charleston ArtWalk. He served on the corporate relations committee for the Clay Center for the Arts & Sciences. Bill was also an avid West Virginia University football and basketball fan.
Funeral service will be conducted at Sand Fork Baptist Church at 11 a.m. Friday, February 24, with Pastor Bryan Groves and Pastor Ben Tuel officiating. Burial will follow in Sand Fork Cemetery.

Emma Lee Haid, 83, of Charleston passed away Sunday, February 19, 2012, in Gallipolis, Ohio.Emma was a past employee of Libby Owens Ford Plant and CAMC Memorial Hospital. She was a 1947 graduate of Charleston High School.
Emma was a loving homemaker, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was an avid gardener, and loved to read.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George A. Haid Jr.
She is survived by her children, Susan A. Yerrid, Denise E. Payne, Gretchen L. Bailey, George A. Haid III and Randall A. Haid, all of Charleston; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

William "Bill" P. Harris, 91, of Cross Lanes departed this life Sunday, February 19, 2012, at his home following a short illness. He was a loving and devoted father who will be greatly missed by family and friends.He was a retired World War II Seabee Navy veteran. Over the years, he had affiliations with the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a retired pipefitter, having worked at Union Carbide in South Charleston for over 43 years. Bill faithfully attended Calvary Baptist Church in Hurricane, where his wife is a member.
Survivors include his loving wife of 64 years, Ruby Harris; and three children, Pamela Radford Anderson of Hurricane, Barbara Jones of Catlettsburg, Ky., and Patrick Harris of Charleston. Bill is also survived by four grandchildren, Sara Austin of Saline, Mich., Missionary Nathan Radford of Kitale, Kenya, East Africa, Christy Reed of Mt. Orab, Ohio, and Michael Jones of Cincinnati, Ohio; as well as seven great-grandchildren.

Dewey was a U.S. Army veteran, and a former resident of Cave Creek Assisted Living in Troutville, Va.
Dewey lived at Cave Creek from May 10, 1985, until January 31, 2012. The staff of Cave Creek came to love Dewey, and became his family. Dewey had respect and love not only from the staff, but also from the other residents. He was a sweetheart, always pleasant and willing; he had a way of calling your name that would melt your heart, making it next to impossible to say no to him. Dewey enjoyed shopping and eating out. We all love you and will miss you; we all are blessed to have been with him when he re-dedicated his life to the Lord. Rest in peace, and we look forward to seeing you again.
There are no known survivors at the time of his passing.

Charles Calvin Nasby, 87, of Clothier passed away February 18, 2012, at CAMC General Hospital, Charleston.He was born November 24, 1924, in Mifflin, and was a son of the late Alexander and Minnie Nasby. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Louisa; brothers, James, Frank and Jessie; two brothers-in-law, Clyde McComas and Walter Woosck; and three sisters-in-law, Melba Nasby, Veda Nasby and Lena Nasby.
He was retired from Westmoreland Coal Company. He was a Christian, and attended Coal Valley Freewill Baptist Church. He was an Army veteran of World War II, and will be honored with a full military service.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Beatrice; his daughter, Diana (Jimmy) Stollings; granddaughter, Cindy Stollings; grandson, Jamie (Susan) Stollings; great-grandchildren, Sydney Stollings, Jacob Goldsberry and Joshua (Casey) Goldsberry; two sisters-in-law, Irene McComas and Garnet Woosck; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Lowell O'Dell, 90, left his earthly life February 20, 2012, at Summersville Regional Medical Center, and entered into his heavenly home.He retired from Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, Akron, Ohio, with 32 years of service. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II, and received the Purple Heart for injuries received on Iwo Jima. He was a member of Cottle First Church of God.

Maxine F. Poe, 92, of Charleston passed away Tuesday, February 21, 2012.Maxine was born in Gauley Bridge on July 28, 1919, to Gertrude Davis and Willis M. Frame. In 1921, they moved to Charleston, where they were joined in 1922 by her brother, Dana, now deceased.
Maxine went to Glenwood and J.E. Robins Elementary; Woodrow Wilson Junior High; and Charleston High School, class of 1937. She received her associate's degree from Kanawha Junior College, and her teaching certificate from Concord College in 1938. She started teaching in 1939 at Buena Vista Elementary in Charleston, in a two-room school where she taught three grades. A tragic car accident interrupted her teaching, but she then continued at Morris Harvey College to get her master's in elementary education in 1942. She went on to Columbia University in New York City, and graduated with a master's in elementary education in 1946.
Maxine married Alfred Poe on December 14, 1945. They moved to South Charleston, where he was principal of South Charleston High School, and she taught at Zogg O'Dell and Montrose. Alfred retired in 1969, and became mayor of South Charleston from 1971 to 1975. Maxine retired from Montrose in 1975, after 35 years of teaching. They then alternated living in Florida and West Virginia until Alfred died in 1994.
Maxine and Alfred traveled all over the world. One of their most memorable trips was in 1956, when they visited Cuba while Castro was trying to take over the country. The couple often gave slide shows of their trips.
She belonged to local clubs; volunteered at Memorial Hospital and the Culture Center; and was very active in church, attending Bream Presbyterian; First Presbyterian of South Charleston; Christ Methodist; and First Presbyterian Church of Charleston. She also loved playing the organ.
In 2008, she moved to Edgewood Summit, where she enjoyed her final years.
At the request of Maxine, there will be no service or visitation.

Huston Clinton Smith Sr., 87, of Elkview passed away Sunday, February 19, 2012, at home.He was a retired glass worker with Libby Owens Ford, and member of Leatherwood Missionary Baptist Church. He was a Baptist minister at several local churches, and served as a home missionary. Huston loved spending time with his family; reading; and was an avid bowler, bowling on several leagues, and evangelizing while bowling.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Shelya W. Smith; grandchildren, Maria D. Carte, Amanda D. Smith and Matthew S. Smith; and daughter-in-law, Gloria Smith.

Sandra K. Turley was born October 24, 1945, in Charleston, and died Friday, February 17, 2012, in West Chester, Pa., after a five-year battle with breast cancer.She was the daughter of the late Worthy and Neoma Figgatt. Sandy spent her youth on Woodrum's Lane on Tyler Mountain, and was a 1963 graduate of Dunbar High School. She graduated summa cum laude from West Virginia State College in 1967, majoring in education. After college, she and her high school sweetheart, Dan, were married July 14, 1967, and began 44 wonderful years together.
Sandy taught at East Bank and Dupont High Schools, and one year at Rineyville Elementary School in Rineyville, Ky., when she and Dan were stationed at Fort Knox. When Dan was sent to Vietnam, Sandy moved back to Tyler Mountain for a year, and when his service was over she and Dan settled in their hometown of Dunbar. Their son, Brian, came along, and Sandy stayed home to be a full-time mom to him. Brother, Jon, arrived five years later. In 1980, Dan, Sandy and family relocated to West Chester, Pa., and have made their home there for the last 31 years. After the boys were out of school, Sandy worked briefly at Simplex Time Recorders, and then retired after nine years as West Goshen Township secretary.
She is survived by her loving husband, Dan; son, Brian (Kristi); son, Jon (Beth); and three wonderful grandchildren, Justin, Alyson and Logan. She is also survived by sisters, Connie Turley of Charleston, JoLynn (Don) Parsons of Marietta, Ga., and Cathy (Randy) Koontz of Charleston.
